Introduction

The Assets Team within Capacity Planning and Development provides expert services to schools to help meet their statutory and other responsibilities for the school land and buildings.

Subscription service

This service provides:

Access to the supply caretaker team
Helpdesk service
Briefing to newly recruited staff with responsibility for the premises for example the headteacher, caretaker or school manager
Discount on the project support and consultancy services

The cost of the service in 2008/9 is £500.

Servicing Package

The servicing package covers the main heating and electrical systems in school which are serviced in accordance with statutory requirements. Also included are advisory services for asbestos and tree management.

The servicing package is tailored to the needs of each school based on the systems requiring service. Schools were informed of the cost in December 2007. A lump sum equal to the cost of the package is provided in each school's delegated repairs and maintenance budget.

Property Manager

This is a new service being offered from April 2008 to support schools with facilities management, including:

caretaking and cleaning
construction work
development projects
maintenance of the buildings
premises related health and safety issues

The Property Manager is experienced in these areas and is professionally managed by the Assets Service. They serve a small group of schools working to priorities individually agreed with each school.

Using a property manager is intended to release a significant amount of headteacher time and provide a cost effective alternative to appointing a school manager and will significantly reduce the burden of property management on schools.

The service is offered to primary and special schools at £10,000 per year.

Consultancy

Problem solving and advice to schools on all premises related issues including:

caretaker recruitment and management
training and development
dealing with emergencies
assisting in disputes with contractors
extended school issues.

For schools using the Subscription service, the cost is £170 per half day session (max. 3 hours) and £325 per full day session (max. 7 hours). For other schools the costs are £220 and £430 respectively.
